oatmeal_apples vol. 1

Hello there! The first issue of Oatmeal_apples is in the air.

Today I'll tell you about surf-music. Surf-music is the music-style originally created in the late 50s and beginning of 60s, developed and existed mainly on the southern coast of the United States, primarily in California. Surf is mainly cointained of instrumental compositions. However, there were performers who enriched surf-music with vocals. Surf developed from such genres as rock 'n' roll, rockabilly and rhythm-and-blues. The main themes of the songs were surfing, ocean, cars and girls. We can say that the surf is very clearly reflects the mood of well-being of society's in the air at the time. But the main problem, why surf didn't become popular throughout the country, was that it was very much tied to California as a geographically and culturally appropriate. Environment (ocean surf) and lifestyle (surfing, dancing, open-top cars), who chant in the compositions of surf-groups, were null for the majority of States, so this theme was not close to them. Surf has lost its popularity in 1965, and this has contributed to several causes. In addition to geographical and cultural exclusion, mid 60's marked for the United States, the so-called "British invasion". In the charts, the top lines were occupied by bands, led by the Beatles, that came from the UK. Also, in the 1963 assassination of President Kennedy took place and the outbreak of war in Vietnam in 1965, severely undermined the idealism and sense of well-being in the minds of Americans - a condition associated with the very essence of surf music.

Despite a brief and limited popularity of surf-music, its' influence for the further music's development is great. Firstly, the recording center moved from New York - a lot of groups recorded in Los Angeles. Secondly, surf-music has led to the improvement of technical equipment for playing and recording music - appeared new types of guitars, amplifiers, gismos(surf musicians first began to use the gismo with the effect of reverberation, the sound that became one of the key in subsequent surf rock music). And thirdly, surf-music started the era of availability of performance and soundrecording of music. Many groups, which later became famous, began from dance-floors of surf-resorts from the Malibu and Santa Monica in the north and to San Clemente in the south.

In the 90's surf become popular again, largely thanks to its use in the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp fiction". Since then, a large number of bands playing surf around the world contributed to surf-rivival.

And, at last, after tedious reading, it is time to rock out and listen to the guys who played music about the oceans, surf, boards and the girls sitting next to them in the car.

Enjoy!
